COMMANDER’S MESSAGE | SEPTEMBER 2026

The Pillar of Americanism

From Commander Joey Martinez
American Legion District 28

As we continue our journey through the Four Pillars of The American Legion, I would like to take a moment to reflect on one that is especially important in the times in which we live: Americanism.

Today, there are many who are questioning our form of government, our institutions, and even the principles upon which our nation was founded. In times such as these, it becomes even more important that we teach our children what Americanism truly means.

Americanism is more than displaying our flag or standing for the National Anthem. It is understanding our Constitution, respecting the rights and freedoms it guarantees, participating in our communities, and recognizing that the strength of our nation rests with its citizens.

We have a responsibility to teach the next generation not only what our government is, but why it was established the way it was. We should teach our children that our freedoms did not simply appear—they were fought for, defended, and paid for by generations of Americans who answered the call to serve.

We must never forget those who came before us who stood in harm’s way to preserve this nation. And we must never forget those who stand at the gates today—our men and women in uniform who continue to serve, sacrifice, and keep the wolf from our doorstep so that we may live in freedom here at home.

As members of The American Legion, Americanism gives us an opportunity to do more than remember. It gives us a responsibility to teach.

Let us take that responsibility seriously. Let us teach our young people to know their history, understand their Constitution, respect the flag, value their freedom, and appreciate the sacrifices that made that freedom possible.

Our children are not simply the future of America. They are the future stewards of the freedoms entrusted to us.

Let us teach them well. Let us lead by example. And let us ensure that the torch of American freedom is passed to the next generation burning just as brightly as it was when it was placed in our hands.

For God and Country,

Commander Joey Martinez
